It's been a while!

My goodness it's been a while since I last posted. How times flies!  I'll have to get back to it.

Guardate!

It's a small world

I’ve never liked the old Harry Secombe song, “If I ruled the world” but I did find myself the other morning agreeing with his sentiment “every day would be the first day of spring”.  Finally after what felt like forever of windy and rainy days, damp air and grey skies, the sun came out and best of all the air actually felt warm.  Having spent weeks sitting in front of the computer with my daily exercise limited to the hourly trek downstairs to the fridge and back up again, I decided to take my tummy and a rather surprised dog, out for a walk.
Sea?

Decisions, decisions, where to go?  Towards the sea or the mountains?
Snow capped mountains?
We settled for the snow-capped peaks in the far distance. Leaving the road with its traffic hurtling past at breakneck speeds, the pooch and I picked our way along muddy paths pitted with massive puddles and slippery sandy coloured mud.
Local producers selling wares
We hadn’t been out long when I realised we were actually seeing a microcosm of Italian life.  In the space of an hour and a half (the pooch would insist on stopping to sniff every blade of grass, scrub and stone) we saw hints of so many things that are typical it was like taking a whistle-stop tour of Italy. The choice of dramatic landscapes and beautiful scenery whether on the coast or in the mountains.  The wide range of Italian agriculture represented by local producers selling their wares, or tending flocks in fields.  Trees heavily laden with lemons,

and fields full of new crops just beginning to wake up.
Crops waking up
Runners pacing the road embodied the Italian tradition for world-class gymnastics and sport
Runners
(which include motor racing!) Old buildings in various states of neglect and decay,
Old buildings
just glimpsed through scrambling undergrowth where they will probably remain hidden until uncovered sooner by local property developers, or later by archaeologists in millennia to come.  Mimosa trees on the brink of fulfilling their yearly promise to burst into gaudy colour in time for “Ladies Day” remind one of Italian traditions.  Another, that of eating and drinking, unfortunately this time combined with another not-so-lovely Italian tradition of being mucky pups could be seen by litter strewn in various places.  For art, there was (the inevitable
L) graffiti.
Graffitti
The enthusiasm and vitality of the Italians themselves was demonstrated by the vibrant spring flowers opening up as the sun came out.  Should you get tired, you can always rest on Italian furniture, famous for elegant design whether it be traditional or modern.
Furniture traditional and modern
I came to the conclusion that was why so many people return  year after year for a holiday.  It’s a place that offers so much, and all under a peerless blue sky. And you can see it all about you every day if you care to look

Dress up to the nines!

One of the additional pleasures of our short trip to the Amalfi coast was to meet up with my old friend Paola and her family again.  We hadn’t seen each other for years although we keep in intermittent contact.  I always complain to Vito that not only did we never get to see her (and let’s face it she only lives in Naples,
Fit for "Ladies Day" at Ascot!
a two hour drive from Rome), he had never even met her.  We were always “going to go”, but you know how it is, life gets in the way sometimes.
Beautiful hand smocking by traditional methods
This year though, with our cousins’ timely visit to the Amalfi coast I said to Vito it would be an ideal opportunity to drive to meet them via Naples and stop en route to see Paola and he could finally say hello.   So that’s what we did.  Today though I’m not going to describe our trip to Naples for you,
Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner (London set)
but take a side step from what I usually do (i.e. describe things we’ve seen and done) and tell you a little of what Paola has done instead.  Paola is a gifted designer who runs her own baby knitwear company from Naples.
Finished by skilled craftswomen
A mother herself, she is well in tune with the needs of busy mothers who demand quality as well as easy care garments for their babies, and clothes that are beautifully designed and not mass or poorly produced. The results of her hard work can be seen on her website for the company which is called Chiaraluna, and if you have a look for yourself, I’m sure you will understand why I think her stuff is beyond compare.
Easy care in original designs
Using only pure products, such as the best merino wool, pure cotton and mother of pearl buttons,
Finished by hand with mother-of-pearl buttons
and with the garments finished by hand by skilled craftswomen, Paola’s company offers top-notch products at an affordable price.  And the range of designs and colours are just fabulous.  Not only that, on some items there are different options, so you can choose exactly what you want for the important baby in your life
J

Paola also blends the past with the present in charming ways.   She uses traditional methods of smocking that have all but died out now with mass production; no one want to take the trouble to make them these days.

Paola does though, and to wonderful effect
Winter is coming!
as you can see in the few photos I’ve put up here.   But don’t take my word for it.  Have a look at the Chiaraluna website
Check out the website
for yourself browse through the full range of Paola’s baby collection, and you’ll quickly see what I mean.  I can't possibly show you all the wonderful clothes on offer, but have only given a tiny selection here.  You need to see the website for yourself.  you can find it here.  It's available in Italian and English.

Christmas is coming, and in many places in the world, so is winter.
Amazing range and use of colours

Why not treat that special baby in your life to something really special?
Choose from more modern or traditional styles
Surely that little person is worthy of only the best?

Won’t he or she looked soooo good, dressed up to the nines?

Check out the Chiaraluna website here.

Nadine's Letters continued ....

Just to let you know that I'm back ....

I couldn't get the first blog (Nadine's Letters from May 2013) to continue to upload photos properly so in the end I had to create this blog which carries on from the first.  I have added both a search function and the Google translate function to both blogs.

Amalfi coastline
I've started here with a description of a trip to Pompei taken September just gone.  (Please see the page marked "Pompeii" above).  Seeing Pompeii is something I'd been wanting to do since my mother told me all about it when she returned from her holiday there when I was a little girl in 1965.

I hope you enjoy my visit as much as I did.
Best wishes
Nadine
